As the large section of our society, including Muslims does not feel any
embracement in taking or giving dowry in marriages, members of Muslim Rajput
community in Gazipur of UP are citing an example of anti dowry reform by saning
barat, dowry, feasts and other marriage rituals which are not Islamic.
This noble initiative of an organisation of
Muslim Rajputs of Kamsar Region in Gazipur, ‘Anjuman e Islah Muslim Rajput Kamsar
o Bar’ has been turned
into a movement. The Anjuman seeks to make marriage the least burdensome for the
bride side.
The organisation also promoting people to
give equal rights to their daughters in their properties and now inter cast
marriages within Muslim society are also on its agenda.
The key person of this movement and Jamia
Millia Islamia Professor Junaid Harish says that some people of his village
started opposing the dowry system of our society in four decades ago and now
many people are voluntarily joining this cause.
“In 1972, some people decided to oppose the
dowry system and it turned into a movement eventually. Now, almost all the
people of our community do not demand or accept dowry. The important thing is
that the youths are participating in this cause. I think it is a huge
achievement for our movement.” Harish
told Bindas Reporter.
He said, “Later, We added little other
reform initiative with this cause. Giving equal rights to the daughters in
properties is one of them. We are encouraged that people are happily doing
this. Equal rights in properties for girls are not only a big social initiative
but also it is an important in Islamic point of view. ”
It is also noteworthy that giving equal
right to girls in properties is also on the agenda of All India Muslim Personal
Board.
The Anjuman now adding another initiative
of inter caste marriages within muslim community because Muslims of this region
are divided on the line of so-called upper and lower castes.
Professor Harish, a faculty of Islamic studies
department of Jamia says, “It is a reality that Muslims are divided on the line
of caste system like Hindus in India and our region is not different. The caste
system is not in Islam. So, we are going to promote inter-caste marriages
within Muslim community. Initially, many people showing positive response to
this initiative.”
